Jay ick
Jay ick is a small seaside village
near Clacton-on-Sea.
Most of Jaywick’s shops are on the
Broadway, the main shopping street.

coastline is a 200-year-old Martello
Tower, which is now an arts and
heritage centre.

tiles commemorating lives lost at sea.
The tranquil village of Thorrington sits
at the top of
Brightlingsea
and boasts the
only remaining
tide mill in
Essex.
St Osyth
The ancient village of St Osyth
is named after Osyth, a saint and
nglian princess.
The village was a focus for the St Osyth
witch persecutions in the sixteenth
and seventeenth centuries. In 1921
the skeletons of two women were
discovered in the garden of a house in
the village. One was claimed to be the
witch Ursula Kemp who was reported
to be the first to be prosecuted.
The most notable building in the village
is undoubtedly its medieval abbey
a Grade I listed building. St. Osyth’s
bbey also known as St. Osyth’s Priory
was a house of ugustinian canons in
the parish of St. Osyth.
Founded by the Richard de Belmeis,
Bishop of London, circa 1121, it
became one of the largest monasteries
in Essex and was dedicated to Saints
Peter and Paul as well as St. Osyth.
The Martello Tower at Point Clear has
been converted into a war museum.
Quirky facts:
A wooden spear from 400,000
B.C, found locally in Jaywick in
an area of foreshore erosion, is the
oldest known man-made wooden
artefact found in the British Isles.
In terms of annual average
rainfall, St Osyth is the driest
recorded place in the UK.
Brightlingsea open air
swimming pool was
built in 1933 and is one
of the few remaining
lidos still in use in the
UK today.
