The District has 6 main shopping towns - Clacton, Frinton, Walton, Dovercourt, Brightlingsea & Manningtree, all of which are very different.

The largest town, Clacton-on-Sea, has an excellent choice of the most popular ‘High Street’ names, and a good selection can also be found in other town centres as well.

However, where the District excels is in the abundance of independent retailers we have not just in our towns, but in all our villages too, offering a unique opportunity to purchase goods that you cannot generally find on the High Street.

Free Parking Initiative

In 2011 a free parking initiative was introduced to encourage additional footfall in our towns in the afternoons.

Due to the success of this trial, this initiative is still in place and it means that visitors and residents can park in any Council car park for free from 6pm - 8am all year round (excluding The Naze at Walton-on-the-Naze and Holland Haven, Holland-on-Sea car parks).

A Board Guidance

Businesses across Tendring are being encouraged to fully market themselves in a bid to attract customers – but also keep streets safe and tidy for pedestrians. Many shops and firms use A Boards to advertise, but they can create a hazard for those walking round main shopping areas. They can also cause problems for the visually impaired, wheelchair users, pushchairs and mobility scooters.

Tendring District Council (TDC) wants to see trade booming without causing a danger to shoppers, so the Council has produced a set of guidelines aimed at striking the right balance and hopes that businesses will do their bit by sticking to the protocol. This involves only putting out one A Board per premises and also siting them in the correct place. The guidelines include a checklist of best practice, making clear what is acceptable – as well as what isn’t.
